Message From the Director

Friends and Families, I’m glad you found your way to Leisure Magazine—Prince William County’s go-to source for all things recreation. The bright flowers and warm breezes of the changing season reawaken our senses and stir our imagination for life’s new possibilities. This spring and summer I invite you to journey with the Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism to rediscover the possibilities that lie within you, taking inspiration from our beautiful outdoor spaces, invigorating fitness classes, experiential education programs, and fun-filled family events.

This issue is packed with a stellar lineup of invigorating programs that promise to rejuvenate the body, mind, and spirit. If you’re looking for a creative workout with your family, try Xtreme Hip Hop Step Aerobics for all ages at the newly opened Harbor Drive Wellness Park on June 10. If you love history, check out the Ben Lomond Civil War Hospital Weekend on July 22 in commemoration of the 162nd anniversary of the Battle of Bull Run and learn how soldiers were treated during the war. For those with an interest in painting, sign up for Coffee and Canvas at Veterans Memorial Park on May 20 and enjoy your favorite hot beverage while painting in the outdoors. Experience the wonder and mystery of the outdoors during a night hike at Silver Lake Park on June 24 and July 21. Challenge your children to test their endurance in an encouraging environment at the Kids for Kids Triathlon at the Chinn Aquatics and Fitness Center on Sept. 17. Play a few rounds of golf at one of our three courses, which have been upfitted with new bunkers and amenities.

We have an exciting and action-packed line-up of over 300 full and partial day summer camps for 2023 for all ages and abilities. Our camps, rated as a “best of” pick by NOVA Magazine, are in high demand and are filling fast. Make sure to reserve your spots early! Please see the Camp Guide for more Information: www.pwcparks.org/summercamp.

Visit our newly opened Thursday Farmers Market at Pfitzner Stadium from 3-7pm for hand-made products, treats, and healthy eats straight from the producers. Our classic Dale City Farmers Market is still open on Sundays from 8am-1pm at the corner of Minnieville Road and Gemini Way starting on April 3. Visit pwcparks.info/2023farmersmarkets for more information.

If you’re looking for year-round variety at one low cost, consider a membership at one of our two Aquatics and Fitness Centers. Our low memberships rates are all-inclusive of land and water classes in addition to full use of gyms and pools. Come experience a personal touch and family-centered environment not found anywhere else.

We are proud to offer adaptive programs for guests of all abilities, most recently the new Miracle League at Hellwig Park that promotes physical and mental well-being for youth and adults with mental and physical disabilities through the game of baseball on a universally accessible field. Register at pwcparks.info/miracleleague2023. We are also eager to welcome you to Aquatic Zumba at the Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center, flat water kayaking at Lake Ridge Park, and Art Expressions at the Birchdale Community Center.

With the summer season nearly upon us, we are seeking lifeguards to support our four community pools and two waterparks—SplashDown and Waterworks. This is a great opportunity to build foundational career skills while making lifelong memories. Lifeguard starting pay is $15.03 and we offer paid training and uniforms. Lifeguards must be 15 and have a passion for people. Our department is proud to be the largest employer of youth in Prince William County.

Apply online: swimtest.pwcparksjobs.com

A warm thank you to everyone who attended our “State of the Parks” event earlier in March at the Kelly Leadership Center. It was an exciting night for our department to share the impacts of parks, recreation, and tourism on our community and preview the exciting things underway, from new park development to our award-winning programs. The evening was capped off with a community conversation about our goals for future and ways we can further improve our services. I invite you to view our annual report and “State of the Parks” video presentation at pwcparks.info/ 2022stateoftheparks.

I hope you will find the means to fulfill your leisure, wellness, and recreation interests within the pages of this spring/summer edition of Leisure magazine! I am grateful you chose Prince William County for your recreation needs and wish you and your family a vibrant spring and summer season. Our passionate staff is committed to ensuring you have an exceptional experience. Please let us know how we’re doing and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.

May you strive to be your best self with Prince William County Parks, Recreation &Tourism as your guide!
